SUMMER CAMP

TRUST US...IT'S MORE THAN JUST CAMP

Our camps are driven by our mission to create relationships and offer programs that provide a healthy start for children, growth for youth and teens, wellness for adults and unity for families. We offer camp for two age groups: k-1st and 2nd-5th, as well as before and after camp care options. Our camps reinforce the Y's focus of Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility, and offer children the chance to develop new skills, make new friends, learn the value of cooperation, build self-reliance, maintain strong moral values, develop skills for living, develop a sense of well-being, and learn respect for the environment.

Our staff are selected for their special skills and experience, as well as their personality and ability to work with children. All staff are carefully screened and interviewed through a state-administered child abuse and criminal history check, three reference checks, and staff trainings which include CPR and first aid.

CHILD CARE OPTIONS

We offer full-time and part-time divided into specific, age-appropriate programs that provide your kids with high-quality and enjoyable experiences. Children will learn socialization, academics, swimming (3-5 year-olds), music, and physical education. Our childcare hours of service are 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

INFANT CARE

6 Weeks - 12 Months - The YMCA's infant care program is designed to meet the needs of each baby based on his or her own schedule. Infants nap, feed, play, and cuddle when they're ready, not on someone else's predetermined timeline. Music, singing, reading, finger playing, and constant verbalization foster budding socialization, self-concept, and developmental skills. Facilities are equipped with cribs, swings, walkers, and age-appropriate toys and books.

TODDLERS

12 Months - 3 Years - Toddlers make great developmental strides from first steps to potty-training and our teachers are right there to provide support in a fun and active environment. Energetic teachers plan activities to encourage a toddler's eager investigation of the world. Teachers plan days filled with a balance of quiet activities, spirited music and movement, and plenty of climbing, running and jumping.

 PRESCHOOL/PRE-KINDERGARTEN

3 Years - 5 Years - Children in the Preschool Program enjoy themes, field trips, special events, and graduation that builds self-confidence and socialization skills. Swim lessons are included. We offer full-day and half-day preschool programs. The Y provides a stimulating learning environment for preschoolers.

AQUATICS

The Lock Haven Area YMCA offers a wide range of swimming lessons, classes, and aquatics programs for all ages.  Membership at the YMCA includes use of the pool during open swimming and lap swimming times at no additional cost.

SWIM LESSONS

Y Swim Lesson curriculum is based on a continuum that focuses on a skill-based progression that builds confidence and supports swimming skills. There are three phases within the continuum, beginning with Swim Starters (children 6-36 months), then Swim Basics (children ages 3-12 years) and Swim Strokes (school-ages children 5-12 years). Each phase is broken into specific stages that are designed specifically for that age group on a cognitive and social ability.

Program enhancements include:ease at time of registration, improved curriculum focusing on skills-based instruction with an emphasis on personal safety, tools and resources to support families at home.

SWIM TEAM

Winter Swim Team

Open to all youth 5-18 years of age who are able to swim one length of the pool (25  yards) with a recognizable swimming stroke.  Our program is designed to teach the fundamentals and advanced levels of competitive swimming.  We strive to develop a sense of team spirit, sportsmanship, fair play, and fitness habits that will last a lifetime.

The Lock Haven YMCA Loggerhead Swim Team program has 3 swim levels: Box Turtle, Snapping Turtle, and Ninja Turtle.

Box Turtles: Beginner swimmers and those newest to swimming who need more teaching and instruction. Swimmers at the Box Turtle level can swim a length of the pool, BUT need work with:

  • Rotary Breathing
  • Breaststroke and Butterfly
  •  Diving
  •  Turning
  •  Stroke Technique in ALL strokes

These swimmers will focus on technique (60-80%) rather than training and endurance (20-40%)

Snapping Turtles: Snapping turtle is an ‘INTERMEDIATES’ swimmer. They know ALL the strokes-or most of them-BUT need constant refinement. The emphasis will be on technique, training, and endurance. Snapping Turtle should:

  • Be able to perform rotary breathing while swimming freestyle
  •  Legal Breaststroke and Butterfly, as well as back
  •  Be able to repeat distances of 100 yards or less

Practice will be 40-60% teaching and 40-60% training.

Ninja Turtles: The most ADVANCED swimmers. Swimmers are relatively adept at strokes and techniques, and will spend most of the practice time on endurance and strength training.

They should expect to:

  • Be able to repeat swims of varying lengths and speeds during practice
  • Start/Turn/Stroke mechanics are solid at the beginning of training.

Practice will incorporate drills during sets. Teaching will be 0-20%, Training 80-100%

Swimmer registration and information packet can be found on the last 5 pages of the parent/swimmer handbook.
