The Lock Haven Area YMCA offers a wide range of swimming lessons, classes, and aquatics programs for all ages. Membership at the YMCA includes use of the pool during open swimming and lap swimming times at no additional cost.
Y Swim Lesson curriculum is based on a continuum that focuses on a skill-based progression that builds confidence and supports swimming skills. There are three phases within the continuum, beginning with Swim Starters (children 6-36 months), then Swim Basics (children ages 3-12 years) and Swim Strokes (school-ages children 5-12 years). Each phase is broken into specific stages that are designed specifically for that age group on a cognitive and social ability.
Program enhancements include:ease at time of registration, improved curriculum focusing on skills-based instruction with an emphasis on personal safety, tools and resources to support families at home.

Winter Swim Team
Open to all youth 5-18 years of age who are able to swim one length of the pool (25 yards) with a recognizable swimming stroke. Our program is designed to teach the fundamentals and advanced levels of competitive swimming. We strive to develop a sense of team spirit, sportsmanship, fair play, and fitness habits that will last a lifetime.
The Lock Haven YMCA Loggerhead Swim Team program has 3 swim levels: Box Turtle, Snapping Turtle, and Ninja Turtle.
Box Turtles: Beginner swimmers and those newest to swimming who need more teaching and instruction. Swimmers at the Box Turtle level can swim a length of the pool, BUT need work with:
- Rotary Breathing
- Breaststroke and Butterfly
- Stroke Technique in ALL strokes
These swimmers will focus on technique (60-80%) rather than training and endurance (20-40%)
Snapping Turtles: Snapping turtle is an ‘INTERMEDIATES’ swimmer. They know ALL the strokes-or most of them-BUT need constant refinement. The emphasis will be on technique, training, and endurance. Snapping Turtle should:
- Be able to perform rotary breathing while swimming freestyle
- Legal Breaststroke and Butterfly, as well as back
- Be able to repeat distances of 100 yards or less
Practice will be 40-60% teaching and 40-60% training.
Ninja Turtles: The most ADVANCED swimmers. Swimmers are relatively adept at strokes and techniques, and will spend most of the practice time on endurance and strength training.
They should expect to:
- Be able to repeat swims of varying lengths and speeds during practice
- Start/Turn/Stroke mechanics are solid at the beginning of training.
Practice will incorporate drills during sets. Teaching will be 0-20%, Training 80-100%
Swimmer registration and information packet can be found on the last 5 pages of the parent/swimmer handbook.

Twinges in the Hinges (traditional): M/T/Th 9 a.m.
If you are looking for a gentle, low-impact workout or you suffer from arthritis pain, an injury, or soreness from fibromyalgia, this class is for you! These pool workouts are developed to help you build cardiovascular and muscle endurance while stretching the muscles and working the joints.
